Learning how to play the guitar is no simple feat.  It takes months of practice before you can become proficient, and if you want to do something a bit more advanced like playing lead guitar, blues guitar or jazz guitar, this process can take even longer.  Even something that seems relatively simple when you look at others doing it, for example, strumming and singing and the same time, might be immensely difficult to you as a beginner.  Having the right guitar tutorial will definitely help as well.  Here are a few essential tips you must know if you want to be on the fast track to guitar stardom.

Get A Good Guitar

Before even starting on your learning journey, I highly recommend you get your own instrument.  It’s not necessary to get a top-end guitar when you are just learning, but getting a well-made instrument is important.  A well-made guitar is easier to play and is unlikely to warp or break.  These days, a well made guitar with a solid wood top is relatively inexpensive.  Do avoid getting plywood based guitars which sound terrible and aren’t likely to last long.

Understand Music Theory

Many believe that understanding music fundamentals is a waste of time.  They believe that a real musician does not need to understand any basic music theory, and can just listen and play.  This might be true for extremely talented individuals, but for the huge majority of us (including many well-known recording and performing artistes), it’s essential to get a strong grasp on the fundamentals in order to be able to learn the instrument and the music well.

Practice

Practice is definitely a core part of learning how to do anything.  When learning how to play the guitar, more practice will build your muscle memory, and this will enable you eventually recall chords and change them quickly at will.  A few months of good, solid practice will completely change the way you play.  You’ll turn into a solid, smooth player from a beginner who can’t even remember the most basic of chords.

Patience

As with all skills, patience is key.  You cannot expect to become a master guitarist overnight.  Your finger strength and muscle memory simply won’t allow it.  Although practice is good, by straining your fingers too much, you’ll risk injury.  That is why, if you want to master the guitar, you should have patience.  Any time you feel a pain in your fingers or wrist, you should stop, and let your fingers and hands rest.  You can continue another day when you feel better.  It’s definitely not worth it getting injured over learning how to play the guitar.  And, do get that guitar tutorial to help you along the way!
